Composite Fillings
Composite Fillings in North Vancouver
Tooth decay causes cavities to develop in the enamel of the teeth. This can allow bacteria to infiltrate the pulp of the tooth resulting in inflammation and infection. If left untreated, the infection will spread deeper toward the root, compromising the tooth’s integrity. It is best to treat cavities before any pain begins. When treatment is performed early, placing a dental filling is a relatively straightforward procedure.
Composite Fillings vs. Other Filling Material
Fillings are used to fill the cavities in the teeth and protect the teeth from further damage. There are several materials that can be used for fillings, including amalgam, gold, ceramic and composite materials.
Metal Fillings
While metal fillings tend to be very durable, their shiny metallic colour makes them more visible in the mouth.
Ceramic Fillings
Ceramic fillings are a durable material that can be used for a filling. They are created in the dental lab and then chemically bonded to your teeth. Unlike metal fillings, they offer the advantage of being colour matched to your teeth, so they look completely natural.
Composite Fillings
Composite fillings, also known as direct fillings, are the most commonly used filling material. Similar to ceramic fillings, composite resin offers the advantage of being colour matched to your teeth, so they are practically invisible in your mouth.
What Is the Dental Filling Procedure?
- Your dentist will administer a local anesthetic to maintain your comfort.
- They will isolate the decayed tooth and remove the infected portion of the tooth.
- They will clean the area to eliminate any bacteria
- They will seal the cavity using composite resin.
- The resin is hardened using a special light.
- Finally, the dentist will shape the hardened material so it looks like a natural tooth.
