Sedation Dentistry in North Vancouver
If you suffer from dental anxiety, have a strong gag reflex, or other condition that makes dental procedures difficult, you may benefit from conscious sedation, allowing you to relax during your visit. We have several sedation options that are suitable for children and adults.
Conscious Sedation
Unlike a general anesthetic that will put you to sleep during the procedure, conscious sedation lets you stay awake while feeling fully relaxed.
Nitrous Oxide Sedation
Nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, is administered using a mask placed directly over the nose. The relaxing effects of the gas are immediate and wear off almost immediately after the mask is removed. This sedation is ideal for children and adults who suffer from lower anxiety levels.
Oral Conscious Sedation
Oral sedation is administered in pill form and is usually taken about an hour before your appointment. Like nitrous oxide, this form of sedation helps you to relax, but the effects are more potent. Oral conscious sedation has the added advantage of causing an amnesiac effect. This is ideal for patients who are particularly fearful of being in the dentist’s chair, as it removes the anxiety surrounding future appointments. Due to the longer-lasting effects of oral sedation, patients will need someone to accompany them to and from their dental appointment as they cannot drive.
IV Sedation Dentistry
IV sedation is ideal for patients who suffer from a strong gag reflex and extreme dental anxiety. IV sedation allows for a deeper level of relaxation and is usually administered in a medical setting under the care of an anaesthesiologist. Patients will remain fully conscious during treatment but without any feelings of anxiety.
